Take the Stress Out of Packing

May 11, 2017

Labels, boxes, tape, markers, bubble wrap and storage are a few of the things that may be on your check list of items to get if you are planning to move.  Moving can be stressful. Unpacking can also be stressful if you haven’t properly packed and stored your belongings. As you are unpacking you may find damaged furniture or broken glass or better yet you could walk into a mound of boxes that have no labels and you have no idea where to start. If you are about to embark on the wonderful journey of moving living spaces we have come up with a few tips that will hopefully make your life a little easier when storing, unpacking, and settling into your new home.

#1. Label, Label, Label

As you are packing your boxes, be sure to do it by room. As you finish a box mark on the sides and the top what is in the box and what room the box is from or which room you are wanting it to go to at its new destination. This will insure that anyone helping you move will know where to take the box as soon as it comes off the truck.

#2. Use the Right Size Box

In order to keep your back from breaking be sure to put your heavier items like books in smaller boxes. Save those large boxes for linens, blankets, towels, and pillows. Also, don’t forget when you are stacking the boxes to put the heavier ones on the bottom. You don’t want your bottom boxes to get squished.

#3. Think Ahead

Make a list ahead of time of what items you may need during the transition. Set those items aside. You don’t want to pack your tooth brush, deodorant, and blow dryer if you are going to need them it the next morning.  Also, leave out your cleaning supplies so that you are able to tidy up before you leave or clean your new place before you unpack.

#4. Hanging Clothes

Having to untangle hangers after a move can be a headache. Thankfully someone has designed a box to make moving all your hanging clothes a little easier. Wardrobe boxes are tall and have a rod that runs across the top. This allows your clothes to hang just like they would in your closet. These boxes are also great to keep for storage after the move for off season clothes.

#5. Protect your Items

If you are not using a moving company that has moving blankets or you are not purchasing them yourself, another option would be to leave any blankets you already own out and use them in between wood furniture, mirrors, glass, and around frames. This can help prevent scratches during the transition.

Moving can be an exciting time because change is exciting but it can be stressful. Take some of the stress out by following these simple tips. Gather your supplies, put those boxes together, and happy packing!
